Indifference is a person’s passive attitude towards the world around him when he absolutely does not care what is happening around him. Calmness is a state of peace of mind in which a person is not nervous due to turmoil. What is the difference between these concepts? Many writers discussed these issues.
Indifference can generate evil, this idea is proved by the image of Luzhin, the hero of the novel F.M. Dostoevsky's "Crime and Punishment." This man deserved a high rank, but for this he had to go over his head, because for him the main thing is power, money and his own person. He approaches marriage to Duna Raskolnikova as a deal: the bride is educated, smart, but poor, which means she is dependent and will obey. But will it be happy - is it all the same? And for the sake of a profitable marriage, Luzhin is ready to slander the brother of the bride, poor girl Sonya Marmeladova. All this is only because he is indifferent to everyone but himself. This is not calm, but a form of indifference. Luzhin is often fussed and nervous; he cannot be called a calm person.
Starodum, the hero of the comedy D.I. Fonvizin's "Undergrowth" cannot be called an indifferent person. He not only expresses progressive thoughts about honor, conscience, marriage, upbringing, but also acts (helps niece Sofya to marry her beloved person, mentors her morally). The hero does not care what is happening around him; he would like to make the world a better place, to help positive heroes (Sophia, Pravdin, Milon) to eradicate evil, ignorance and stupidity. At the same time, Starodum does not fight with anyone, does not swear, he remains calm, which gives his image dignity. Behind true calm lies confidence in one's innocence, principles, and ideals.
Thus, we can say that indifference is a defensive reaction against the world: when you can not or do not want to change anything, it remains to give up. Indifference can give rise to evil, the heart becomes stale, therefore it must not be allowed. It’s worth striving for calmness, it helps to achieve goals, the main thing is to understand what you really need, move in this direction, and then balance in the soul will certainly come.
