It was such a magician for the Mertsalov family that became Dr. Pirogov, a real-life person whose act was described by Kuprin.
The protagonist of the story “Miraculous Doctor” came to the aid of strangers in an almost hopeless situation: the father of the family lost his job, mother and daughter became seriously ill. The Mertsalovs did not have firewood, instead of a decent apartment - a room in the basement, there was even nothing left except empty cabbage soup. And Pirogov went to give gifts to familiar children, a warm and pleasant evening awaited him ahead, but he met a desperate man on the way. When the doctor faced someone else's grief, he did not stand aside, simply could not. Pirogov examined the patient, helped the family with money and, which is also important, instilled in them the confidence that everything would work out. Indeed, after the miraculous intervention of the unknown, the poor went out of a vicious circle of need.
Dr. Pirogov himself was not at all a wealthy philanthropist who had nowhere to put up money, his well-worn coat. It's just that in this intelligent man with a gentle, serious face, there was a comprehensive kindness, turning into holiness. This doctor is a true professional who extends the Hippocratic oath throughout his life, not only at work, he is ready to help people, every suffering person could count on him. And Pirogov considers his good deeds to be absolutely normal, not boasting of his mercy and not expecting rewards. Those who saved his life, he did not even introduce himself.
The story “Wonderful Doctor” invariably evokes a feeling of tenderness and respect among readers. Even through the pages of the book, Doctor Pirogov affectionately convinces that everything will be better sooner or later. His image is not a fictional character, it is the norm for each of us, because the story of saving the family is taken from life, where we must independently create such stories.
