The main character of the work, Sergey, not finding a place on the fronts of the First World War, defected, forged documents and went to his native village of Radovo, where he had not been for four years.
On the way to the village, the coachman says that Radovo is a good place, simple but happy people live in it. On holidays, they always eat meat and pour kvass, the charioteer boasts that a police officer often visited here at one time. The coachman also complains about the turmoil: the judge often makes the rent pay more than it should, and people from the neighboring village cut down someone else's forest, which led to conflict and bloodshed.
Upon arrival, the coachman sends the protagonist to the miller. Sergey and the miller drink tea from a samovar and talk for a long time. The protagonist goes to the hayloft, he has not seen these places for a long time and recalls in thought, looking at the old gate, as the beautiful girl once said to him here: “No”.

In the morning, Sergei is treated to pancakes, and the old woman says that hard times came with the war: Pron Ogloblin during a quarrel over the forest he chopped down an foreman with an ax, since then there have been constant “peasant wars”. Sergei recalls the story of the coachman and decides to pay a visit to the peasants.
On the way, he meets a miller who is going to visit some Snegins. Anna Snegina, a married woman, having learned that Sergei, a famous poet from St. Petersburg, came to the village, recalls that in his youth he was in love with her. Miller reports that the Snegins invite the narrator to their house.

Sergei fell ill and lay unconscious for several days. One day he felt better, he got out of bed and saw a lady in white, the hero recognized Anna Snegina in her. Sergey finds out in the Snegins' estate that Anna's husband, Boris, was killed in the war. Anna quarrels with the guest from grief, reproaching him for desertion. Sergei dissuades Ogloblin from his intentions and invites him to the tavern.
Chapter 4
Sergey spent all summer hunting. He completely forgot about the Snegins and completely surrendered to unhurried rural life. One evening, Ogloblin burst into it. He exclaimed about the victory of the Soviets, that they would finally receive all the arable land and forests. Pron stated enthusiastically that he was ready to found the first commune here.
The men went to the Snegins the same day and took their farm to themselves. Miller sheltered a destitute family at home, and thus, Sergei again met with Anna.
She regretted what had happened last night, spoke of her love for her dead husband. Anna understood that all this was a "criminal passion." In the evening, the Snegins family left. Sergei felt longing and later left the village himself and went to Petersburg.

Six years pass, a letter comes from Sergey to Radovo. Miller writes that everything has changed in the village, and not so long ago Pron Ogloblin was shot. Sergey again decides to visit his native place.
Upon arrival, the miller presents Sergey with a letter that he brought from the post office two months ago. He sees the London seal on the letter, Anna writes to him. She longs for the old days, recalls a long spring and often in the evenings comes ashore and looks out for Soviet ships in the distance.
