Pushkin was never able to name his latest and incomplete novel. “Dubrovsky” is the name that the publishers came up with before the publication of the manuscript after the death of Alexander Sergeyevich. The novel was named according to simple logic - this is the last name of the protagonist, Vladimir, whose life path describes this work.
It is worth noting that this path is very winding and full of adventures that make his life truly amazing and even a little picturesque. The novel Dubrovsky describes the story of a quarrel between two landowner neighbors: the arrogant general-anshefe Kirill Petrovich Troekurov and his neighbor Andrei Gavrilovich Dubrovsky. Everything happened because of an annoying little thing. Troekurov already had a very unfriendly servant, who came to Dubrovsky at the wrong time and in the wrong place. Because of the rude servant, a real war is unfolding between two once friendly neighbors. As a result, it comes to the point that the insulted Kirill Petrovich, taking advantage of a suitable opportunity, deceives the landowner Dubrovsky of his family estate and all his fortune. Andrei Gavrilovich can not stand such a shock and soon dies, leaving his son Vladimir without a roof over his head and without money. This was a turning point in his fate, after which the young man was forced to lead a robbery. Together with several faithful servants who remained with him, despite his poverty, he keeps in fear all the estates in the district, but does not touch Troekurov’s estate, bypasses it intentionally.
A rather interesting fact is that Vladimir does not hold any grudge against judicial officials. This suggests that he is a young man, but thoughtful. He understands that despite the fact that these people are deeply unpleasant to him, they are not guilty of what happened. And do not deserve revenge. Vladimir has several people loyal to him: these are his former servants who have lived their whole lives in his father’s estate and treated him well. They remember Vladimir from an early age, so they don’t abandon him even in moments of deepest grief and leave to rob him.
The life of Vladimir during the robbery recalls the story of Robin Hood. He lives like a robber, but still he somehow manages to be famous for justice. His fate is winding, Vladimir has a very difficult time, but he has a goal - he wants to take revenge on his father’s offender, the hated landowner Troekurov.
And finally, by a fortunate coincidence, Dubrovsky got a job at Troekurov’s house as a French tutor. He withstands the cruel “rite of passage” of Troekurov with dignity - shows courage, being locked in a room with an angry bear. The crazy landowner does this trick with all the new servants, and Vladimir not only withstands it, but also deserves the respect of the owner.
But here fate gives Dubrovsky an unexpected gift - love arises between him and the daughter of the landowner Troekurov Marya. This feeling changes him. He takes a fresh look at his life and voluntarily refuses revenge on the offender of his father. He decides to no longer look into the past, but to live in the present, in the name and thanks to Masha. Meanwhile, Masha’s father is preparing for her a marriage of convenience, from which Dubrovsky promises to save Mary if she agrees to run away with him. But fate again plays with Vladimir, because of an unexpected incident, he does not have time for the wedding and his lover marries another man. Now Masha made a promise in the church, and as a believer he cannot break it.
This decision of Masha becomes for the young man another great test, now he is forced to voluntarily abandon his personal happiness, barely touching him. Dubrovsky is rethinking his life, he realizes that he has nothing more to do in his native land, because the main thing that kept him here before is Mary. He dismisses his gang and goes abroad. We can only hope that there Vladimir’s life will turn out in a new way and he will find his happiness. Nobody knows for sure - Pushkin never managed to complete his novel. After deciphering the writer's drafts, scientists suggest that in the future Dubrovsky will return from abroad, having learned that Vereisky (Masha’s husband) died suddenly. But he again suffered an evil fate - an anonymous denunciation was being written on him, and he was forced to answer the law for his past atrocities.
In any case, whatever the end of this magnificent story, we can understand its main morality. And she teaches us to look to the future and not focus on the past, especially on the negative. Dubrovsky went a rather difficult way and this tempered him. Love healed, taught to forgive. He also understood what it means to truly love: it is to accept and respect the decision of another person, even if it is completely not to your liking.
